Response to Business Evolutionist’s Discovering Music post
This was supposed to be a comment on the Business Evolutionist. But it turned into a full-fledged post.
The RIAA is fighting for control. The Internet is an untapped tool that if use correctly (it’s a matter of time) it will circumvent large labels and the RIAA all together.
While writing this comment, I had a thought. What if there was a music site which operated much like Amazon does. This site would allow musicians to post original works. Randomly artists would be picked on a weekly basis to be Artist of the week. The artists would be ranked by most downloads, so the more downloads a song got the higher on the rank they would be until they where number one.
Once they reached number one that particular song could only be number one for a limited amount of time (say two weeks) then the song would be retired.
There would also be another type of ranking, it would be greatest gainers. This ranking would list the songs which gained the most downloads over their previous days downloads.
Not only would the most popular songs get the most expose but so would the songs that are up and coming. The whole point of this service would to give new artists much needed exposure.
It would be a mix of Amazon’s, Billboard, and Bearshare’s Spotlight business models.
