The Rider

August 19, 2015 · 1 minute read

“When you are content to be simply yourself and don’t compare or compete, everyone will respect you.”

— Lao Tzu

During my morning ride, an older rider passed me. He looked 65ish.

My inter-voice prodded me to pass him. I mean — His bike was of lesser quality, I’m younger and I’ve been riding consistently for 5 weeks. Picking up speed, I narrowed the gap and over took him.

After passing him, I felt a sense of pride. “Yeah, that right! I’m the man!”

A few minutes passed and what seemed like from nowhere he flew pasted me. At that moment, there was no doubt of whom was the better rider. All I could think was dam! and I couldn’t help but laugh.

Touché.

If I’d been able to catch up, I’d shake his hand.

Next time.
